An AI score estimates how much of a text contains patterns commonly linked to AI writing. It is useful for finding sections that may need review before submission. It is not proof that a person used AI.
What does 99%+ accuracy mean?
During our internal comparison testing, results from our checker matched Turnitin AI detection results at a rate above 99%. This means the tool can give students a close preview of writing that may be flagged.
The result is still an estimate. A strong overall match does not mean every paper will receive the exact same percentage on another platform.
What affects AI detection accuracy?
Language, subject, formatting, quotations, tables, code, and mixed human-AI writing can also affect the amount of usable text and the final score.
Can the result be wrong?
Yes. Every AI detector can produce false positives and false negatives.
- False positive: human-written text is marked as AI-like.
- False negative: AI-generated text is not identified.
Turnitin also acknowledges that false positives are possible. Its current reporting hides exact results in the 1–19% range because low scores require extra caution.
This is why a score should start a review, not end it. Read the text, check the evidence, and consider how the paper was written.
How should you read the score?
A high score means more of the reviewed text matches AI-writing patterns. It does not mean there is the same percentage chance that AI wrote the whole paper.
A low score means the detector found few AI-like patterns in that scan. It does not prove that every sentence was written without AI assistance.
Use the score with sentence-level review, sources, notes, drafts, and revision history. These provide more context than one number alone.
How to get a more useful result
- Check a complete draft instead of one or two sentences.
- Remove unnecessary formatting problems before scanning.
- Review suspicious passages in their full context.
- Verify every source, quotation, and factual statement.
- Add your own analysis and specific examples where the writing feels generic.
- Run the revised draft again and compare the result.
Do not add spelling mistakes or awkward wording just to lower a score. The goal is clearer, more original writing—not tricking a detector.

Is AI detection 100% accurate?
No. All AI detectors can make mistakes. Results should be reviewed with the text, sources, drafts, and writing process.
Why do two AI detectors give different scores?
They may use different training data, models, thresholds, and definitions of AI-like writing.
Can human academic writing receive a high score?
Yes. Technical, formulaic, repetitive, or heavily edited writing can sometimes resemble AI-generated patterns.
Can I use the result before submitting to Turnitin?
Yes. TurnDetector is designed as a Turnitin-style pre-submission check. It provides a close preview, not an official Turnitin report.
